Detailed guide

What to know and what to do next

Create a personal planning estimate by entering costs for the same period and currency, separating verified figures from assumptions and reviewing what the total excludes.

Step 1

Use a consistent calculation period

Annual tuition should not be added to a monthly living-cost figure without converting both to the same period. Decide whether the estimate covers one academic year, a full programme or the first month after arrival.

  • Enter tuition for the selected period.
  • Convert monthly housing and living costs to the same period.
  • Document the source and date for every input.

Step 2

Include the costs families commonly overlook

A useful estimate should include required one-off and recurring expenses, not only rent and tuition. Actual expenses differ by city, accommodation choice, lifestyle, exchange rate and institutional conditions.

  • Application, deposit, travel and arrival setup costs.
  • Insurance, books, equipment, transport and communication.
  • Emergency reserve and currency-exchange margin.

Step 3

Interpret the result responsibly

The total is a planning estimate based on the numbers entered; it is not a quote or a verified official financial requirement. Recalculate when a fee schedule, exchange rate or living arrangement changes.

  • Label assumptions and missing inputs.
  • Compare the estimate against confirmed funds.
  • Keep a contingency and review refund exposure.

Step 4

Use transparent assumptions in every estimate

Choose one currency and one planning period, and show the assumptions behind each cost line. Separate one-time expenses such as applications, deposits or travel from recurring tuition and living costs. If exchange rates, fee changes or inflation are used, label them as assumptions rather than presenting the result as a quotation.

  • State currency and duration clearly.
  • Separate one-time and recurring costs.
  • Label assumptions and estimate dates.

Step 5

Stress-test the family budget

A realistic plan should include a contingency for exchange-rate changes, delayed income, unexpected travel or costs not covered by a scholarship. Calculate the gap between available funds and expected expenses, then identify how that gap would be covered. Never count a scholarship, loan or part-time job as secured unless it is confirmed.

  • Run a conservative cost scenario.
  • Show funding already confirmed separately.
  • Plan a backup for the funding gap.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator fetch live exchange rates?

Only treat a rate as live if the interface explicitly identifies its source and timestamp; otherwise use a clearly labelled user-entered assumption.

Does the result prove that I meet a visa financial requirement?

No. The relevant authority's current official requirements and accepted evidence determine that.

Can the calculator quote a final university bill?

No. It estimates using the inputs provided. The institution's current fee schedule and the student's actual circumstances determine final costs.

Should future earnings be counted as guaranteed funding?

No. Treat unconfirmed income, loans and awards as uncertain until the terms and availability are established.
