Explore Study in India

Use the Government of India’s Study in India portal to review participating institutes, courses and the currently stated application process. Institution-level listings on this page will only be added after their individual sources are checked.

1. Explore courses and institutes

Compare central, state, deemed-to-be and private universities, engineering institutes, management schools and other institutions. Then verify the exact programme and campus from its own official page.

2. Follow the correct admission route

Engineering and other technical programmes may use national counselling or institute-level routes; medical programmes have their own entrance and counselling rules; many private colleges run programme-specific applications.

3. Keep a source-backed checklist

Record qualifying exams, category/seat rules, deadlines, the full fee schedule, refund terms and required documents from official sources. Prior-year cut-offs do not guarantee a current seat.

Expanded directory

Browse Indian institutions on Prep IQ

The live directory includes Indian central/state institutions, private universities, engineering and technology institutes, management schools and selected colleges. A listing is a discovery aid, not an admission guarantee or Prep IQ partnership. Institution type is not yet a separate database filter, so confirm affiliation, awarding body, campus and recognition on the official source.

Online courses and degrees

IIT / NPTEL online learning — verify the current course

For IIT-associated online short courses, start with NPTEL/SWAYAM and choose an active offering with its own enrolment dates, assessments and optional certification exam. This is different from an IIT campus BTech/MTech admission. IIT Madras also has online-first BS degree pathways, but application windows, assessment rules and degree requirements must be checked for the next published cycle.

Detailed guide

What to know and what to do next

Explore the process of choosing an Indian institution and programme, evaluating eligibility and fees, preparing application documents and using official admission sources.

Step 1

Shortlist recognised institutions and programmes

Start with the exact programme and its awarding institution. Check relevant recognition, admission notices, curriculum, campus location and whether the course meets any later professional or postgraduate requirements you expect.

  • Use institution and authorised regulator sources.
  • Check the programme's current admission notice.
  • Confirm the campus and mode of study.

Step 2

Understand admission routes

Application routes can vary by institution, programme and academic year. Some programmes may have entrance tests, centralised counselling or direct admissions; do not assume one process applies everywhere.

  • Read the current prospectus and official notices.
  • Record eligibility, test dates and counselling stages.
  • Keep application IDs and acknowledgement receipts.

Step 3

Plan cost, documents and timelines

Build a budget that includes tuition, examination charges, housing, travel, materials and other course expenses. Verify scholarship availability and refund conditions from the institution or sponsor.

  • Prepare academic certificates and identity records.
  • Check reservation, domicile or category rules only where relevant.
  • Track deadlines and preserve official notices.

Step 4

Confirm the admission pathway for the programme

Indian institutions may use centralised counselling, entrance examinations, merit lists, direct applications or other programme-specific processes. Identify the official admission authority first, then verify the current eligibility notice, calendar, reservation or category rules where applicable, and required document format. Avoid relying only on social posts or old coaching material.

  • Locate the official admission notice.
  • Verify exam or counselling dependencies.
  • Save the current notice and corrigenda.

Step 5

Prepare an application and fee record

Keep a record of registration numbers, submitted choices, fee receipts, document-verification notices and key deadlines. If a centralised process applies, follow its instructions as well as the institution's programme information. Fees and eligibility can vary by course and category, so confirm the terms directly from the official notice.

  • Track applications and payment receipts.
  • Check document verification status.
  • Record official contact and grievance routes.

Frequently asked questions

Are admission rules the same across Indian institutions?

No. Rules vary by institution, programme and admission cycle; always use the current official notice.

Can an institution listing confirm recognition?

A listing alone is not sufficient. Verify recognition and any programme-specific requirements through the appropriate official authority.

Can old admission cut-offs predict the next round?

Historical cut-offs are only context and do not guarantee a current result. Use the latest official notice for decisions.

What if two websites show different eligibility rules?

Prefer the current official admission authority or institution notice and seek written clarification when the conflict affects eligibility.
